Brooks also notes that many phenomena fall under the umbrella of “coincidences,” including cosmic events to a husband and wife having the same birthday.

But a lot of coincidences purely come down to the perspective of the person experiencing it. For example, if you don’t notice a coincidence or you don’t believe that it had any meaning behind it, you might not consider it to be one. On the other hand, research suggests that people who score higher on measures of schizotypy, which includes similar symptoms to psychosis, may be more prone to experiencing coincidences and magical thinking.

This is likely because ancient humans needed to rely on pattern recognition to be able to spot potential threats. According to research from the University of Cambridge, the top coincidences are sharing a birthday with someone, connections involving books, TV, radio, or the news, vacation-related coincidences, meeting people in transit, and coincidences related to marriage or in-laws.

According to Beltman, however, many of these coincidences can be easily explained. Let’s take the birthday one, for example. Apparently, you only have to be in a room of 23 people for there to be a 50/50 chance that two will share a birthday. If you really break down these coincidences scientifically, you’ll often realize that they’re not as mystical and magical as they may seem at first glance.

We notice some synchronicities often but never know what to connect it to, just thinking it’s our angels or something. We always take notice of it and make sure to tell each other and take a mental note. We happen to see repeating numbers like 11:11, 4:44, etc. We notice if we were talking about something and then we see it while we are out driving or away from home.

Last year I swapped a book at a Little Free Library and this bookmark was in the book I chose to take. I don’t have any kind of connection to this but was using it in a book I am now reading. We had an appointment out of town and I almost didn’t take this book with me, but then just decided last minute and grabbed it. I didn’t see it the whole time while we were there probably because it was behind us, I guess, and just as we were getting up to leave I saw the picture on the wall and just said; “no way…” (in awe). Then my husband asked what it was and I got the book and bookmark out and asked him to look. He, also in awe, said it definitely meant something….we just really don’t know what.
