As any documentary that David Attenborough voices over will tell you, our world is full of wonders. From fascinating creatures crawling over every inch of the planet to amazing geographical sights, there’s no limit to what we can explore. And of course, most of us love traveling, even if we aren’t able to do it as often as we’d like to.

According to GoBankingRates, the average American spends between $2,000 to $3,000 a year on travel, but Expedia reports that the majority of Americans only travel one or two times a year domestically. Those over the age of 54 are more likely to travel three or more times annually, and just under 10% of Americans say they take more than 5 trips a year between different states.

As far as international travel goes, Expedia reports that only 41% of Americans venture outside of the US every year. People with post-graduate degrees are more likely to travel to other countries each year, and only 8% of Americans go abroad more than three times during a calendar year.

Among the most visited cities in the US each year are Miami, NYC, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Denver, Memphis, Corpus Christi, Pensacola and Aspen. And as far as how Americans decide where to jet off to, travelers say they rely most heavily on the advice of friends, followed by social media, review sites, booking sites, guide books and blogs and magazines.

When it comes to why Americans travel, Expedia notes that most go just for fun, some venture out for celebrations, and others go for outdoor activities or events like music festivals and sporting events. But as far as how travelers decide where to go, it’s understandable that they might rely on recommendations from friends or social media. If you trust your friends’ opinions, why wouldn’t you listen to them? However, there’s a literal world out there to explore, and sometimes, it’s worth it to think outside of the box when it comes to your travel destinations.

You may have dreamt your entire life of eating a slice of pizza in Naples or enjoying a croissant while sitting in front of the Eiffel Tower. But you might get even more fulfillment from your travels if you choose to visit a less popular destination. Tryp.com notes on their site that one major appeal of visiting a less famous place is how easy it is to have an authentic cultural experience. When locals aren’t used to seeing many tourists, they’re more likely to be curious about them. And you won’t have to stray outside of popular areas to see how the locals really live and eat. If you’re lucky, they’ll even show you some of their customs!

If you’re looking for a peaceful and serene travel experience, it’s great to get off the beaten path. Cities can be wonderful to explore, and they offer plenty to do. But it can be frustrating (for locals and visitors) to have to wade through crowds of tourists to walk down the street or see the Mona Lisa from 50 feet away. Less traveled destinations will have better preserved nature, and it’ll be much easier to find a quiet place to yourself in these locations.

Avoiding popular tourist attractions can also be much more affordable and allow you to get more bang for your buck. It’s no secret that areas crowded with visitors mark up the prices of anything and everything they can. And while this can be great for boosting the local economy, it’s not always conducive to traveling on a budget. Residents of smaller towns and less visited countries might be even more excited to see some visitors from foreign lands, and they’ll provide you with excellent service at a lower price than what you would find in a popular capital city.

You’ll also have the opportunity to take unique photos that you and your friends have likely never seen before if you visit lesser known locations. Not everyone knows what a Lithuanian forest looks like in the summertime or what the beaches look like in Mauritius. But everyone will be fascinated by the stories of your travels and the photos you have to share once you visit these places. Just because you don’t know anyone who’s ever been to a certain place doesn’t mean the destination isn’t worth exploring!
