We have a passion for nature, and one of our deepest secret desires is to own a massive house with a sprawling, wild garden out front and in the back (well, that and a mountain lakeside cabin, too). Imagine something from ‘The Addams Family’ but slightly brighter and friendlier. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it brings huge smiles to our faces when we hear about someone growing a fantastic wildlife-friendly garden for the sake of protecting nature. Super-trimmed lawns only look good in movies anyway.
Redditor u/IamasimpforObi-Wan shared a story about the house she inherited from her family. The property has wild front and back yards that are great for the local bees and other critters. The number of animals who enjoy the space sounds like something straight out of a Disney animation. Unfortunately, the city had a problem with how unkempt everything looked. However, the redditor found a great solution to the entire issue.

The redditor proved that you don’t necessarily have to give in to unreasonable demands, just because someone in power tells you that you need to do something. Sometimes, they’re wrong. And there are plenty of ways to go around the issue if you’re creative enough. The redditor certainly was!
After getting the local nature conservation association involved, she effectively put a stop to the city interfering with how she and her brother maintain the plants on their property. And the irony that it’s a super ‘green city’ with a focus on ecology that wanted them to be less nature-friendly isn’t lost on us.
The redditor’s post on r/MaliciousCompliance got over 33k upvotes (and counting), and the beauty of this is that she spread the news about the possibility of such an approach. We wouldn’t be surprised if we’ll be seeing more stories of nature conservation associations rushing to the rescue in the near future. Keep up the green work.
It’s not an overstatement that letting your garden grow wild is incredibly helpful for the local wildlife population, big and small. Dr. John W. Wilkinson, from the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation charity in the UK, recently told Bored Panda that two of the best things that people can do is to build a garden pond for the amphibians and reptiles in the area, and to avoid using chemicals.
“In a small garden, even an upturned dustbin lid or bowl will provide a place for animals to drink,” Dr. Wilkinson told Bored Panda that it’s possible to be nature-friendly even with a very limited amount of space. Meanwhile, if you happen to have a bigger garden, you can build a log pile or make a compost heap for critters to enjoy.
This is extremely helpful as climate change continues to impact nature and wildlife. “Climate change can be a very negative factor for frogs, toads, and newts. Ponds can dry up too quickly, meaning their tadpoles don’t have enough time to develop,” the expert shared what’s happening in the UK and how it matters what people do in their own back yards.
“Also, warmer winters affect hibernating frogs. They use more energy during hibernation and partially wake up, meaning they are in poorer condition for breeding. This is particularly hard on the females who put a lot of energy into making eggs (spawn),” he said.
