The enemy of greatness is not a lack of good ideas, it’s not even a lack of intelligence; it is a lack of focus. Focus is more important than genius, it is more important than facts, and it is more important than an Ivy League education.
To be successful you have to focus on what matters the most. It’s not about being “the most productive person,” it’s about being productive at what matters the most.
Focus is Critical
If you’re focused on…more than three goals, than you’re not focused on any goals, you are spread too thin to be effective. Seneca, the Roman stoic philosopher put it another way, he said, “To be everywhere, is to be nowhere.”
The secret to success is doing less; the secret to success is focus. The saying is true then, more is not better…better is better. A focused effort is the best effort.
A Trap
Doing more is a trap, it causes you to confuse activity for productivity. Timothy Ferriss, bestselling author of The 4-Hour Work Week said it best, he said, “Being selective – doing less – is the path of the productive.”
He went on to say, “Focus on the important few and ignore the rest.” You have to ignore the rest, to become the best.
Zig Ziglar said, “Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have twenty-four hour days.”
…Are you focused?
Being Busy is Overrated
It’s hard to be at peace, if you’re always ‘busy,’ and it’s impossible to be productive.
Grasshoppers are busy, what matters is what are you busy doing.
You must determine the two or three things that you need to be focused on, and let everything else slide off the table. Dedicate a certain amount of time to your top two or three goals each day, and then spend the rest of your day doing whatever you feel like doing, like watching television, or eating popcorn or something, without any guilt, because you know that your life is already “focused” on what you want to accomplish.
In Closing
To succeed you have to be focused! The reason most of us do not reach our full potential is because we never focus our lives; we have no understanding of the power that we command when we are focused and determined to accomplish an objective. Somebody once said, “The successful man, is the average man, focused.” That sounds about right to me, so focus your life today, and surprise us all tomorrow.
