We’re only four months into 2020, but it doesn’t feel like it’s gonna be an easy year. And now that we live amid the current global crisis, one can’t help but wonder whether anyone had seen it coming.
Surprisingly or not, two years ago, the World Health Organization warned about a list of pathogens that needed urgent scientific research. The viruses had no known treatments or vaccines, and all had the potential to trigger pandemics that could kill thousands.
The viral danger list included Disease X which referred to “a serious international epidemic caused by a pathogen currently unknown.” The Guardian points out that at the same time, the global pandemic director for America’s National Security Council resigned.
It turns out, two years ago, Bill Gates raised awareness about relevant steps and funds to prevent what could now be a current global pandemic. “Given the continual emergence of new pathogens, the increasing risk of a bioterror attack, and how connected our world is through air travel, there is a significant probability of a large and lethal modern-day pandemic occurring in our lifetimes,” said Gates.
