“So You Want To Make Sure Our Shed Is To Code?”: Neighbor Calls Inspector On These People, They Maliciously Comply

There’s nothing like getting a bit of sweet revenge against somebody who wanted to see you fail. And if that person also turns out to be a nosy neighbor with a penchant for making trouble? Well, we call that a double win.

Redditor u/Monteflash’s story about their neighbor went viral in a flash on the popular r/MaliciousCompliance subreddit. The author of the post explained how their nosy, troublemaking neighbor reported their shed to the city for supposedly being too large.

However, things took quite an unexpected turn, and the neighbor soon got a taste of her own medicine. Scroll down for the full story, in the OP’s own words, Pandas! Let us know what you think about the story, whether you would’ve done anything differently, and if you’ve ever had to deal with similarly bad neighbors yourselves.

The redditor’s story resonated with a large chunk of the r/MaliciousCompliance crowd. Their post got 21k upvotes and started up a fiery discussion about dealing with people in the neighborhood who want to make your life just a bit harder because they enjoy the drama.

After knocking a whopping two inspections out of the park, the couple finally had enough and decided to turn the situation around, in their favor. They reported their nosy neighbor’s property to the city. Especially the unsafe fire pit. They knocked it out of the park.

The sad truth is that not every single person in your neighborhood or building will be decent. Generally speaking, most people are perfectly fine to get along with. But it’s naive to assume that they’ll all be polite, will respect your boundaries, and will have enough common sense not to stir up trouble over nothing. Learning to deal with these neighbors is all about clarifying and enforcing boundaries.

According to Professor Suzanne Degges-White, from Northern Illinois University, the key to getting along with your neighbors is striking a balance between honesty and diplomacy.

She told Bored Panda that even though honesty is generally the best policy, “sometimes a person’s efforts at honesty come off a little too ‘brutal’ and feelings are hurt and relationships damaged, and no greater good is served.” Knowing when to hold back a mean word or two (even if they’re warranted) can help you avoid additional drama further down the line. It costs nothing to be kind and polite.

For instance, in some cases, some gentle feedback can help your neighbor become more aware of their own flaws. They might end up growing as a person. Meanwhile, being overly blunt while talking to them can cause them to resent you. Always remember that you’ll likely spend an awfully long time living next to those people. Do you really want to constantly live in stress?

“Another important consideration is that neighbors can impact our home lives in significant ways! You don’t want to have poor relationships with people you’re going to be in close proximity to each and every day. That’s added stress no one needs, given the amount of stress that we’re all feeling after the last couple of years due to world events!” Professor Degges-White told Bored Panda.

If you happen to find yourself cornered by a chatty neighbor who doesn’t understand privacy and boundaries, you can make up an urgent excuse to get out of the conversation. You can also tell them that you’ve had a long, stressful day, and need some peace and quiet.

At the end of the day, actions speak louder than words. If your neighbor doesn’t get your subtle and not-so-subtle hints about your need for privacy, just get on with your day and don’t engage with them. Hopefully, they’ll get the message.
