REVIEW: Rypeapp Language Membership

Spread the love

The world has shifted virtual in 2020 and that includes educational services like language learning. While travel has taken a pause, many of us are still eager to connect with people from other cultures and resume our language learning progress.

In this review, we’ll cover what Rype is about, how it works, prices, pros and cons, and more.

What is Rype?

Rype is an online language lessons membership that connects you with professional language tutors for one-on-one sessions. They currently offer ten languages: Spanish, French, English, German, Italian, Portuguese, Mandarin, Japanese, Russian, and Arabic. With a membership, you can book with teachers for any of these languages interchangeably.

How it works

To start, they offer a 7-day free trial. You just have to enter your card which they say is required to avoid interrupting your service should you decide to continue. If you ever want to cancel your membership, you can go to the plans & billing section on your account.

The main experience of Rype is built around finding teachers and booking your lessons. Once you choose which language you want to learn, you’ll be shown the respective teachers in their database, their location, their quality ratings, and their attendance ratings.

There are useful information that teachers share in their profile bio’s, where they’ll often share their background, their teaching style, hobbies, and how many years of teaching experience they have.

Rype ranks teachers by showing their ‘Featured’ teachers on top, which we presume have the best reputation via their students. If a teacher does not have enough ratings or student lessons, they’ll be shown as ‘New’.

When booking your lessons, all time zones are converted to your local time so the times you see on the teacher’s schedule are your timezone.

If you’re ever unsure, you can see your local time on the top right side of the app to verify or when you’re booking your lesson (see Local Time: 2:39 PM)

Once your lessons are booked, you can see them displayed on your Reservations tab. From here you could do a few different things, like add a lesson to your calendar, reschedule/cancel, and find your teacher on Skype directly.

At the time of the lesson, your teacher will contact you to ask if you’re ready. And that’s it! You can decide whether you want to hop on a video or audio call, although if you can we’d suggest doing video to make the most out of your learning experience.

Sometimes your teacher may share their screen to show you the lesson material they have prepared for you or to give you feedback on something.

Rype Prices

Currently prices are set up on a subscription level, where you can choose to book 4 hours, 6 hours, or 10 hours a month. You can choose to be billed on a monthly basis or save more if you were to pay 6 months in advance.

Every membership includes access to all the languages and their respective teachers, and you have the option of changing your plan at anytime.

Pros and cons of Rype

There are some pros and cons to point out when it comes to using any service. For Rype, what we liked most was how easy the platform and scheduling experience was. Once you’re a member, there’s no need to think about prices as lesson prices are already baked into your subscription across all teachers.

What we think could be improved is increasing their teacher base and offering more filters to enable more targeted selection of teachers. Of course the two go hand in hand, so Rype would need to increase their pool in order for filter selection to make sense.

Lessons are also only 30 minutes long, which could be great for the busy learner, but after the introduction and small chat, you could be short on time. Just make sure that you communicate with your teacher that you’d like to get started as soon as your lesson time begins.

You could also book two 30-minute lessons back-to-back for a total of 60-minutes.

Do we recommend Rype?

If you have a busy schedule and you’re looking for a reliable and affordable solution for one-on-one lessons, we offer Rype a thumbs up. As we mentioned, they do offer a trial period that allows you to book lessons with multiple different teachers to try out before you commit.

We’d love to know what you think after your experience!
