Now, Halloween might be mostly about fun, games, and dressing up in the 21st century. However, the holiday, historically, has a deep connection to the supernatural. Bored Panda spoke with Halloween expert Lesley Bannatyne about how the holiday is strongly linked to honoring the dead, as well as ‘invoking the supernatural.’

“The presence of the supernatural at this time of year was strengthened when the Catholic Church placed its All Saints (November 1) and All Souls (November 2) at this time of year more than 1,000 years ago,” Bannatyne explained.

“Visiting the cemeteries and lighting candles for the dead, or building altars for them is very much part of Catholic culture to this day,” she went into detail. “You see it, for example, in the Mexican Days of the Dead as well as the marking of All Saints in many European countries. So there’s been a long tradition of invoking the supernatural and honoring the dead at this time of year.”
