Halloween is a holiday that everyone enjoys, from kids and teenagers to adults and seniors. So it’s no wonder that on the night that spirits and monsters wander the mortal realm that you’ll see people of all ages wandering the streets in their costumes.

Among the impressive costumes that we’ve seen in the run-up to Halloween this year, we were fascinated by those worn by the kids of celebrities. Babies and toddlers, as it turns out, can look scarily adorable with a little bit of help from their parents. Bored Panda contacted Lesley Bannatyne who is known as the foremost expert on Halloween in the entire world. In an interview, she explained how Halloween has changed in the last century and shared her hypotheses about what the holiday might morph into in the future. Halloween expert Bannatyne told Bored Panda that the holiday is very adaptable and, so, has changed over the years. “Halloween morphed from a large, town-wide celebration in the early 20th century to a holiday focused mainly on children and trick-or-treating mid-century, to a holiday that both adults and children celebrate in dozens of different ways today.”

She continued: “Halloween’s always been adaptable. When some churches objected to Halloween’s presumed devilishness, they created ‘trunk or treat,’ where they could keep their kids in the church’s parking lot and let them go car to car for treats (and could also control images and costumes).”

“When houses were too far apart for kids to walk, people created trick-or-treating hotspots in certain neighborhoods or town centers. Remember Mall-o-weens? Bringing children indoors to go store-to-store was an adaptation for some communities that feared strangers giving treats to their kids,” Bannatyne went into detail about the holiday’s ever-changing face. “Trick-or-treat itself was in part an adaptation created to discourage kids from egging cars and papering neighborhood trees on Halloween night.”

Furthermore, Bored Panda asked Bannatyne about what the future holds for the holiday and, according to her, there are many paths that it could take. “Halloween follows popular culture, so wherever we go, so will the holiday. If we start to cocoon in our homes, private parties will get more popular. If we become even more social media-oriented, more on display, maybe there will be bigger public costumed events that can be broadcast to bigger audiences,” she said.

“Parents don’t normally let their children go out without them on Halloween, so maybe more attractions will erupt for them — whole Halloween towns, a la Disney? If we go anti-commercial and look for a deeper meaning for the night, Halloween could morph into a time to visit our loved ones in the cemetery like our neighbors in Mexico.”
