John Goodman smiled away on the red carpet, showing off just how far he has come in his weight loss journey.
The 73-year-old looked sharp at the Smurfs premiere at Paramount Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, July 13.

The Roseanne alum has spoken about how his weight loss was a work in progress that unfolded over several years.
He previously said he weighed 392 pounds at his heaviest before starting his fitness regimen in 2007.
“I just stopped eating all the time,” he told ABC News in 2016. “I’d have a handful of food and it’d go to my mouth. I was just eating all the time. I was just eating alcoholically.”

He said that back “in the old days,” he would lose 60 or 70 pounds over three months and then “reward” himself “with a 6-pack of bud or whatever and just go back to my old habits.”
But “this time I wanted to do it slowly, move, exercise. I’m getting to the age where I can’t afford to sit still anymore. And it gives me the energy to work, ‘cause work is very draining,” he told the outlet at the time.

The 6-foot-2 actor revealed the “dangerous” reason that pushed him to switch to a healthier lifestyle.
“I just got tired, sick and tired of looking at myself. You’re shaving in the mirror and you don’t want to look at yourself. It gets dangerous,” he said.

After hiring health coach Mackie Shilstone, John was put on a strict “Mediterranean-style eating plan” that consisted mostly of seafood, vegetables, legumes, and olive oil.
The actor also exercised six days a week, ensuring he hit his goal of 10,000 to 12,000 steps a day.

He used a treadmill, rode an elliptical bicycle, got into boxing, and even gave up alcohol as part of his regimen.
“This didn’t happen overnight—it’s been an ongoing process,” health coach Mackie told the New York Post in 2015 about how John slimmed down.

The Trumbo actor spoke about how “portion control” was a game-changer for him.
“It was basically just portion control, and ‘I don’t need it,’” he told AARP in 2018. “I was just shoving everything into my mouth.”

The legendary actor has been in the business for about five decades and is showing no signs of stopping.
He spoke to FOX26 about voicing Papa Smurf in the upcoming film about the iconic blue creatures.
“You’re only as good as what’s on the page and what your companions bring to it. And we’ve got a pretty good cast of characters here. So I think it’s going to turn out good,” he said.

The actor fractured his hip while filming for the movie in England.
