When you hear the word ‘depression’ the first thing that may come to your mind is sadness.

In reality, depression is different to and much more than sadness. Sadness is normal and is a part of human behavior whereas depression is a mental health issue.

Various factors can cause depression including deprived sleep and a feeling of overload.

University students undergo depression because of the transition college life brings, including being away from home and loved ones and lifestyle change. Students need to adjust to a new surrounding and culture. They also need to balance this with the pressure and competition at university. Students may also have financial concerns or they feel stressed about finding a job. Some students may have pre-existing depression that goes undetected. Hence, it is advisable to get a mental health evaluation before going to universities.

Students may not realize the seriousness of their depression. It affects their state of mind and ability to function well. Daily activities seem difficult to achieve, resulting in delays in final submissions. Depression often causes students to isolate and sometimes suicidal thoughts can creep in. The symptoms may increase as exams approach. If you are a student who feels depressed, then talk to someone at the university. Most universities have student help groups or counselors. They may also provide 24/7 helpline services, especially during exams.

Mums may go through depression, including postnatal depression. Depressed mothers have less patience, are moody and feel stressed. They reach a limiting point beyond which they are unable to perform any tasks. Mums find it hard to talk about their depression. If you are a mother who is having depression, it doesn’t mean that you are a bad mum or you don’t love your child/children. It is alright to be depressed and it can be dealt with. Depression is usually treated with therapeutic medications known as anti-depressants that can produce some serious side-effects.

I have suggested 6 natural remedies here which will help you cope with depression without side-effects.

6 natural remedies to overcome depression

  1. Choose a healthy diet.

Choose a balanced diet that fulfills your body’s daily needs for nutrients and vitamins. Consume foods containing omega 3, healthy fats, proteins and vitamins even if you are on a budget.

Add supplements to your diet such as vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 supplements uplift your mood and help you overcome depression. Also opt for happy foods such as dark chocolate, leafy vegetables and avocado.

  1. Relax with natural oils and aromas.

Natural oils like lavender oil and chamomile oil are natural relaxants. Aromas including sandalwood and rose flowers are also soothing. Their beautiful fragrance will ease your stress and enhance your mood.

You can also spread the fragrance in your room to give yourself a good night’s sleep. I like the aromas of lavender oil and sandalwood. Which aroma do you prefer?

  1. Maintain a fitness routine.

Regular fitness enhances your mental health. A work out session or a run in the park or yoga at home, choose whichever activity you like most. They help you feel stress-free and divert your mind from negative thoughts. Fitness routines release chemicals in the body that make you feel happy. They also improve your self-confidence and self-esteem.

  1. Venture out and engage in hobbies.

Spend time in nature hiking or relax near a waterfall or explore a nature trail. Natural beauty is soothing and uplifts your mood. You might get so busy with your responsibilities, that you neglect your own needs. Despite being busy with work or family commitments, make sure to spare time for yourself.

Keep yourself busy doing things that interest you. In this way, you occupy your mind and you don’t think depressing thoughts. You can also start a new hobby like gardening and involve your kids in it too!

  1. Practice gratitude and appreciate yourself.

Gratitude shifts your attention from what you don’t have to what you already do. Be grateful for what you have now and you will notice an immediate shift in your thinking. You will feel a sense of fulfillment. Maintain a gratitude journal or write a list of gratitude every day. I practice gratitude daily. Noting down all the things, amenities, events and relationships that I am grateful for. Also expressing gratitude for my achievements.

Practicing gratitude not only helps you count your blessings, it also makes you more optimistic about life. You may practice it any time during the day; when you wake up and when you finish your day are the best.

Also, learn to appreciate yourself. Appreciate all the things you do and stop pulling yourself down. Self-appreciation and self-love do wonders.

  1. Donate or volunteer for charity.

Donating what you no longer use gives the chance to help the needy. The act of donating makes you feel good about yourself. You realise that there are others who are less fortunate than you.

It takes your mind off from depressing thoughts and you engage your mind in service for others. Donating or volunteer helps shift your mood and gives you a sense of accomplishment.

You can donate to local charity organisations or find one online. You can also volunteer for charity and donate your time. Don’t have time for volunteering? Look for volunteering online, also known as virtual volunteering.

Did you try any of these tips? I would love to know how you got along with these natural ways to combat depression.
