Be not afraid of greatness. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them”.

William Shakespeare

As a life coach, my clients often come to me and say, “I want to be great”! Then their follow up question comes shortly after, “how can I do that”?

It took me some time to realize that our job was not to worry about the how, but to be extremely clear on the what, be very specific with our goals, and to trust that the universe will figure out the how. This process requires us to relinquish all control and hand it over to what I call the universal tour guide.
I share with my clients that being successful is a challenge that requires dedication and perseverance to make it through to the other side. If it didn’t, everyone would be living a successful life. One of the possible roadblocks that we face is engaging in activities that do not contribute to our greatness. We tend to lack focus and intention which can derail us from the guided path that we should be following.
I read various books, took courses, and went through my own life experiences before I established that there was an easier way to reach our full potential of greatness and to live a life of purpose.

  1. Discover your gift
We were all put on this earth with a customized seed of greatness planted inside of us. Over the course of our lives, that seed is destined to sprout outside of us to be shared with humanity. In order to discover our gifts we must do the following:

• Find out what genuinely makes us happy. What do you love to do with minimal effort? What are you always smiling about when you are engaging in this specific action or activity?
• Use your morals and values to help you discover what you consider important in your life.
• Listen to your dissatisfaction.

2. Be clear on your goals and vision – write down the following:

  • Who do you want to be?
  • What do you want to do?
  • What do you want to have?

3. Trust that the universe will guide you

• Understand that we are heavily connected to the universe and we communicate with this realm daily unintentionally and intentionally.
• Trust what you cannot yet see.
• Show gratitude as if you’ve already received what you have been asking for. When you express gratitude, the world will naturally soften and brighten for you. There is something powerful about being authentically thankful to the universe.
• Think with intention.
• Align what you are thinking and feeling to avoid sending mixed signals to the universe.
• Be patient.
• Seek out and be open to feedback.

4. Be fearless to avoid limitations

We are the only thing standing in our own way. Limitations are not visible, we are not born with them, but simply develop them through experience. Fear is also not visible, but it’s what we can feel! It is a mental state that we succumb to. Experience has taught me that when you have no fear, you are not afraid to do whatever it will takes to be great.

“Not everybody can be famous but everybody can be great, because greatness is determined by service.”

Martin Luther King Jr.

5. Share your gift with others to help better themselves

Being vulnerable is a very important step on your journey to being great. My advice would be to focus on excellence and not perfection. In my opinion, perfection does not exist and experience will teach you that striving for perfection will lead to many disappointments and unhappiness. The way I look at it is if there is anything that I can give back and offer, even if it’s in a small way, then that’s a gift. If there is anyone out there whom could benefit from my coaching, ideas, and my experience – It’s worth being vulnerable to make those connections.

6. Secure the next generation

• This can be done by speaking directly to them. For example, I wrote a book called When Queens Bride The Gap – speaking directly to teen girls about loving themselves more, societal pressures, and striving for greatness. I want them to grow up to be strong women who can help change and shape our world.
• Work closely with the younger generation through volunteer work or with a career such as teaching.
• Give advice and share knowledge just because you can.
• Be a great form of representation for them to see.
• Share inspiration through posts and videos to let them know that they can be anything that they desire.
• Believe in their dreams and encourage them to work hard at pursuing them.

BOSTON, MA – MARCH 13: Lovely Hoffman, a middle school teacher at the Helen Y. Davis Leadership Academy in Dorchester, center, poses with some of the students when worked with in Boston on Mar. 13, 2017. She began noticing how the girls in her class, most of whom are black, valued their self-worth based on skin complexion and hair texture. The lighter their skin and straighter their hair, the better — or so they thought. So the charter school teacher set about to change the way black girls see themselves, creating a curriculum for teaching self-esteem and producing a music video called “My Black is Beautiful,” which features her students. 7. Never forgot your “WHY.

That statement was something that I heard and it always stuck with me. When you constantly think about why you are pursuing your purpose you won’t quit on yourself when life challenges you, because it definitely will! Instead, your why will fuel you to go harder because you understand that the world needs your gifts and your greatness must be shared.
