The Facebook page Slavorum is a fun and informative place, giving humorous cultural insights into Slavic culture around the world. But who are the Slavs? Present-day Slavic people are classified into West Slavic (mainly Poles, Czechs and Slovaks), East Slavic (mainly Russians, Belarusians, and Ukrainians), and South Slavic (mainly Bosnians, Serbs, Croats, Bulgarians, Macedonians, Montenegrins, and Slovenes).
To say that relations between these passionate people can have their ups and downs is somewhat of an understatement. However, despite the shifting alliances and bloody wars that have been fought over the years, there are certain cultural traits that all Slavs share and are easily recognizable. Every Slav knows a kind but wily babushka, the true matriarch of the family, who takes no nonsense and is a master of making pickles. Or the young man with a fondness for Adidas sportswear, fast cars, and techno beats. But Slavorum isn’t just about perpetuating stereotypes, it’s an interesting and educational celebration of all things Slavic while having a little light-hearted fun in the process.
“We started it as a tourist-focused website, but instead of just showing the tourist locations we wanted to show our humorous spirit, our culture and our daily struggles we live by all in a light-hearted and fun way,” Slavorum told Bored Panda. “The humorous approach not only attracted Slavic people who happily share witty humor and satire, but also a wide number of foreigners that welcome it as a un-censored and colorful window into vivid life of Eastern/Central Europe.”
“The funny thing is that in the end, many foreign people recognize themselves in these Slavic mini-stories, so lately we have people from all over the world being our becoming our biggest fans and observing cultural and other similarities between Slavic and their cultures.”
The list below is a nice example of light-hearted Slavic humor, some ordinary Slavs who look hilariously similar to well-known celebrities. Scroll down to check it out for yourself, and check out Slavorum’s website for more Slavic culture and memes!
